InfiMech MX Pricing Is Out: Six Toolheads for $249, and I Want It to Be Real

Back in May I was at JRRF2026, the Japan RepRap Festival, and I walked past booth G-103 without knowing who they were.

InfiMech. Never heard of them.

I wasn’t the only one. While I was standing there, a Japanese visitor came up to the booth and started talking to the team through phone translation. His question was basically “are you a 3D printer manufacturer?”

So it wasn’t just me. Someone standing right in front of a running multi-toolhead printer still had to ask what the company makes.

And that’s exactly what made me stop.

Because on the table was the MX, running live with six spools hanging off the sides. The file on screen was called 6color_Lion_PLA_10h46m.gcode, so a six-colour lion sliced at just under 11 hours, and it was 8% in when I took this photo. The finished samples sitting next to it looked smooth, about what I’d expect from any modern printer.

A brand I had never heard of was showing a multi-toolhead system that, to my eye, was ahead of what better known competitors had on their tables.

What they didn’t have in May was a price. The only thing InfiMech had said publicly at that point was a trade-show remark about keeping the Pro under $1,000.

Two months later we finally have real numbers. And they are low enough that the community’s first reaction was not excitement, it was suspicion.

The Prices

InfiMech announced the MX Series pricing on 24 July.

The way the lowest price works is a bit convoluted, so let me break it down.

You pay $5 now on InfiMech’s store to reserve a VIP slot. That $5 does two things. It locks you a $50 cashback, and it puts you in the first shipping batch. When the Kickstarter opens in Q3, you back the Super Early Bird tier at $299 or $549 using the same email. After the campaign ends, the $5 comes back and the $50 cashback is issued. That’s how you land at $249 and $499.

InfiMech says the $5 is fully refundable whether you end up backing or not. The catch is timing, because your money sits there until the campaign closes, and the campaign doesn’t even have a date yet.

One $5 deposit per printer, by the way. Not per person.

The MX and MX Pro Are Not the Same Printer

This is the part most people skimming the headline will get wrong.

The MX Pro is not just an MX with a box around it.

So the extra $250 buys you two more toolheads, 80 mm more on every axis, an enclosure with active chamber heating, and the monitoring stuff. That’s a much bigger gap than the usual “Pro” upsell.

The toolhead technology itself is identical on both, which is the important part. Whatever InfiMech has built, you get the same swapping system either way.

The Toolhead Design Is the Genuinely Clever Part

Most consumer multicolour printers today push every filament through one nozzle. It works, but every colour change means purging the old filament out first. That’s where the wasted filament and the long print times come from.

The MX uses separate toolheads instead. Same basic idea as the Snapmaker U1 I reviewed a few weeks ago, just with six or eight tools instead of four.

But InfiMech did something to the toolheads that I haven’t seen on a consumer machine before, and as someone who designs mechanical parts for a living, this is the part that made me sit up.

The toolheads have no wires at all. No heater cable, no thermistor wiring, no connector to mate when the carriage picks one up. The printer heats each nozzle by induction and reads its temperature over NFC.

Think about what that removes. On a conventional toolchanger, every tool needs power and signal, which means either a cable running to each parked tool or a set of electrical contacts that mate and unmate thousands of times. Those contacts are one of the hardest problems in the whole category. They wear, they oxidise, they get filament dust in them, and they are a big reason toolchangers have stayed expensive.

Delete the wiring and a parked tool becomes a passive lump of metal sitting in a rack. Nothing to plug in, nothing to wear out, and the tool itself gets much cheaper to manufacture. That is very likely how you get to eight tools at this price, and it is a genuinely elegant answer to a problem the expensive machines solved by throwing money at it.

The arithmetic is worth sitting with. At $499 the MX Pro works out to about $62 per toolhead. The Snapmaker U1 is about $225 per toolhead. Even at full MSRP, the MX Pro is around $112 per toolhead, still half the U1. Whatever else is uncertain here, the cost structure is not a rounding error, it is a different approach.

The honest caveat is that nobody outside InfiMech has stress-tested it. Induction heating and NFC sensing on a moving toolhead is new ground for this hobby, so if it does misbehave, none of us have troubleshooting experience to fall back on. New and clever cuts both ways.

The Community Reaction Was Not Excitement

This is the part I found most unexpected.

When the pricing dropped, the r/3Dprinting thread hit over 100 comments fast. The top comment was not “shut up and take my money.”

It was “Seems worringly too cheap.”

Read that again, because it’s a strange kind of compliment. Nobody is saying the machine looks bad. They are saying the spec sheet is desirable enough that the price doesn’t make sense next to it. If InfiMech had announced $999, the same thread would have been full of people working out shipping costs.

So the doubt is not about whether people want this. It’s about whether it can exist. The questions coming up again and again:

  • How fast is a tool change, actually?
  • Is the swap mechanism still fine after ten thousand cycles?
  • Can the software handle eight tools without falling apart?
  • How does a first-time Kickstarter company sell an enclosed 8-tool machine for $499 when a 4-tool Snapmaker U1 costs $899?

That last one is the real question. Nobody has answered it.

What InfiMech Still Hasn’t Published

This is where I’d slow down if I were you.

For a printer with announced pricing, there is a surprising amount missing. No print speed. No acceleration figures. No toolchange time. No heat-up time for the induction system. And the campaign is literally titled “8X Less Waste” without a single gram of measurement behind it.

Compare that to Prusa, who publish roughly 13 mg of purge per swap on the INDX. You may or may not trust that number, but at least it is a number.

There’s also a patent question hanging over this. On 25 June, Bondtech posted a statement saying INDX is protected by granted patents, specifically covering “selective passive nozzle picking from a rack with contactless temperature control,” and warned that copycat products could face sudden sales or import restrictions. They named no company. InfiMech has never publicly described how its swap mechanism works, so nobody can say whether this applies to the MX or not.

I’m not accusing anyone of anything. I’m saying it is an open question, and open questions matter a lot more when your printer is shipping from a Kickstarter in six to twelve months.

Who Is InfiMech Anyway

I had not heard the name before that day, and I doubt many people in Malaysia have either. So here’s what is actually behind it.

InfiMech has been selling printers at retail since mid-2024. Their TX sells at $199 and the EX at $259, and both have a real owner base. The EX was the second machine on their JRRF table, sitting next to the MX with a pair of APS units beside it.

Press and their user community describe InfiMech as a sub-brand of Flying Bear, a Chinese manufacturer that has been building printers since around 2018, though InfiMech’s own pages don’t say so.

That matters more than it sounds. They are not a group of students with a render and a rented booth. They have shipped hardware for two years, they have customers who own their machines, and they turned up in Japan with a working multi-toolhead printer running live in front of strangers rather than a video loop on a screen.

The caveat is that the MX Series is their first crowdfunding campaign ever, and running a campaign is a completely different skill from selling finished printers off a website. Owner threads for their existing machines also carry the usual mix of praise and after-sales complaints, which is worth reading if support matters to you.

What This Means If You’re in Malaysia

Let’s convert. At around RM4.09 to the dollar, $249 is roughly RM1,020 and $499 is roughly RM2,040. That’s before shipping, before import duty, before SST.

For reference, the Snapmaker U1 sells here at RM3,999 for four toolheads, and you can order it today and have it printing next week.

So on paper the MX Pro is half the price with twice the toolheads. If it lands as announced, it puts an eight-colour enclosed machine inside the budget of a Malaysian hobbyist who currently cannot even consider one. That is a real shift, and I don’t want to talk you out of being excited about it.

I do want you to price the risk properly, though:

  • Kickstarter pledges are charged when the campaign ends, whether the printer is ready or not
  • If it ships late, or never, getting your money back is very hard
  • Warranty and RMA on a crowdfunded machine shipping from Hong Kong to Malaysia is not the same experience as buying from a local distributor
  • If a toolhead fails in year two, who is sending you the replacement, and how long does it take to reach Terengganu or Kota Bharu

None of that makes it a bad deal. It just means the real price is not $499. The real price is $499 plus the risk you are carrying.

My Take

Let me start with what I actually feel about it, because the risk section above might have buried it.

I think the wireless toolhead is the most interesting piece of engineering I’ve seen come out of a small brand this year. Not the price, the engineering. Getting rid of the electrical contacts on a swappable tool is the kind of idea that looks obvious only after somebody does it, and if it holds up, the rest of the category will end up copying it. That it came from a brand I had never heard of, rather than one of the big names, makes it better to me, not worse.

The machine at JRRF was real too. Printing six colours on an open table, in front of anyone who walked past.

But an announced price is a marketing number until a campaign funds and units ship, and admiring the idea is not the same as paying for it in advance. We have all seen impressive demos that never turned into something you could buy.

So where do I stand on the $5? Honestly, I’m intrigued, and I am seriously considering putting one down.

The maths is hard to argue with. Five dollars, refundable by InfiMech’s own terms whether I back the campaign or not, against a $50 discount and a place in the first shipping batch. The real cost to me is having $5 parked somewhere until the campaign closes.

I have not paid it yet, and I want to be clear that reserving a slot is not the same as backing the campaign. But I’m close, and if I do it, I’ll say so here.

Backing the full $299 or $549 when the campaign opens is a bigger decision, and the things worth waiting for are a real toolchange time, a measured waste figure, and a print from a unit that isn’t sitting in InfiMech’s own lab.

So if you need a multicolour printer working this month, buy something that exists. If you can wait, watch this one closely, because I’d very much like it to be real.

Either way, somebody just showed that eight toolheads don’t have to cost four figures. Even if the MX itself stumbles, that idea is out now, and that’s good for all of us.
